URICS - Utrecht Research Institute for Information and Computing Sciences
PhD Program

A PhD trajectory can start at any time in the year, not just at the beginning of the academic year. An appointment as a PhD student is typically for four years. The PhD student is expected to write a PhD thesis in this period. See Nuffic for general information about doing a PhD in the Netherlands.

Being a PhD student in The Netherlands is different from some other countries. A PhD position can be performed in different forms. See also the information from the PhD Candidates Network of the Netherlands.

  • PhD students employed by the university get a salary and social benefits. They do not pay a tuition fee. See our jobs page to look for vacancies.
  • PdD students with a fellowship/bursary/scholarship get funding from a third party, and are not employed by the university. The PhD student pays a tuition fee, unless a bilateral agreement states that the tuition fee is waived. For example, Chinese candidates can obtain a state-sponsored scholarship to pursue a PhD research at Utrecht University, via the CSC, Chinese Scholarship Counsel [English, Chinese], see also the UU website on international collaboration with China.
  • External PhD students are not employed by the university, they often work at a company. The PhD student pays a tuition fee, unless a bilateral agreement states that the tuition fee is waived.

Fellowship and external PhD candidates should contact one of the full professors at the department, and reach agreement about supervision. To get admission to a PhD program of the university, the candidate must have obtained a Master of Science degree, or a similar qualification, see the doctoral degree regulations of Utrecht University [English] [Nederlands].

All PhD students in our department, whether or not employed by the university, must enroll in the Graduate School of Natural Sciences, in the PhD program Information and Computing Sciences. They are provided an education and training program, specified in the graduate school registration form.
