URICS

URICS - Utrecht Research Institute for Information and Computing Sciences
Profile

domimageURICS is the research institute of the Department of Information and Computing Sciences. The goal of our research is to push the frontiers of knowledge and capabilities in science and application areas by developing concepts, theories, algorithms and software methods that will lead or contribute to innovative and feasible information technologies.
We aim at high quality foundational research with a keen eye for application.  The interaction between foundational research and applications fosters highly scientifically and societal relevant results. On the one hand, applications are based on solid foundations,  on the other hand, judiciously chosen applications inspire deep foundational problems.
Our research is concentrated in four partly overlapping subfields:

  • Interactive virtual worlds
This research program is about game technology, media technology, and human-media interaction. The goal in this program is to create technologies for highly effective interactive experiences and environments for simulation, learning, entertainment and training experiences.  The research topics include frontiers in motion in virtual worlds, multimedia analysis, and interaction technology.
This research relates to our master program Game & Media Technology.
  • Software and algorithms
The focus of this program is on discovering and designing the algorithms and technologies in the foundations of Information Technology.  The research addresses advanced issues in information mining, decision-support networks, computational complexity, software system construction.
This research relates to our master program Computing Science.
  • Technical artificial intelligence
The goal of this program is to study the specification and design of intelligent systems with the objective to design intelligent software systems, based on the concepts of multi-agent systems, machine learning, knowledge discovery, and cognitive robotics.
This research relates to our master program Technical Artificial Intelligence.
  • Organization and information
The focus of this program is on the understanding of information-based processes in organizations. The research addresses advances in embedding of Information Technology in communication and organizational structures, business IT-alignment, and product software.
This research relates to our master program Business Informatics.
